Historical Home

2200 sq ft, 2020. South Pasadena

Installation by Urban Organics Design

A bland and crumbling hillside was the first thing visitors to this historical home encountered when driving up to the home's entry courtyard. Following the design and installation process the landscape has been transformed into a stunning drought tolerant garden, with the hillside serving as a striking introduction to the property.

A mixture of climate-appropriate California natives and other Mediterranean plants create a colorful and warm mosaic. A brick retaining wall, chosen to match the existing brick around the home, keeps the West side of the hill in place. A landscape timber retaining wall, stained to match the brick, holds the steeper North hillside. Large and small boulders create a big impact at the "prow". The fence surrounding the upper patio has been removed and California Lilac shrubs will eventually create a natural screen around this area.
